Types of Football Bets

Types of Football Bets

Football has different markets when it comes to betting. There are many options when placing a bet on football matches or when making football betting predictions. However, different football betting sites offer different types of football bets. The 1X2 market (simply backing a home win, away win or draw) is the most popular betting market in the world of football, but are you aware that you can have many options when placing a bet?

Let’s have a look at different markets in football betting;

Single Bets

Single bets or simply ‘singles’ refer to the type of bet that covers just one selection from one market. They are the simplest method of betting and by far the most popular and the best football predictions.

When placing single bets, your return will not depend on the outcome of several matches, so you can cash in as soon as you have guessed one selection correctly. One main advantage of placing a single bet is that they have less risk than doubles, trebles, and accumulators.

A good example of a single bet is placing on Liverpool to win the league before the Premier League season starts. If the Reds are crowned the champions of the Premier then you will get your returns, but in case any other team apart from Liverpool win the league then you lose your single bet.

Doubles

Double bet consists of just two selections, both of which need to be guessed correctly in order to qualify for a return. Seeing that the two sets of odds are multiplied by each other, doubles allow you to back two favourites (or not) and earn the same returns as if you have placed a single bet on the team that have less than a 40% chance of winning a game.

For instance, if Manchester United are taking on Arsenal while Manchester City takes on Everton when you bet on the two games that is simply double. If Arsenal are 2/1 to win and City have odds of 1/5, you simply multiply the two odds and also multiply with your stake. If either selection or both of them lose, the bet is lost. But if both win, your returns will be higher than betting on the two outcomes separately.

Trebles

An advancement on the last type of bet, this refers to the type of bet on three selections in different events. All three selections must be successful in order to get a return.

If the first selection is a winner, then the payout from that is used as the stake for the second selection. If the second selection is a winner, then the payout from that is used as the stake for the third selection. It can be thought of as a three-fold accumulator.

Any type of bet can be lumped into a Treble – singles on a match result, correct score, over/under bets, both teams to score (BTTS), first goalscorer, anytime goalscorer and Asian handicaps.

For example, in English Premier League matches, you can decide to pick three matches and select the both to score market.

Arsenal vs Manchester United – BTTS – Yes

Manchester City vs Chelsea – BTTS – Yes

Chelsea vs Liverpool – BTTS – Yes

You will get your returns once all the matches produce at least 1-1 score line but in any case, if any team in the above selection keeps a clean sheet, then you will have lost your treble.

Draw No Bet

This type of bet is also called 12 or Moneyline. It is a market where you predict the winner of the match without the draw selection. It simply means that whenever the match finishes with a draw after regular time, you will get your stake back. This type of football betting prediction is available for full time, 1st half and second half.

Your bet will lose if the team you backed are defeated

Example:

Real Madrid – Barcelona

If the final result is 1-2, you will win in case your selection was Barcelona. If the final result was 1-1, you would get your stake back but a Barcelona loss will mean you lose your stake.

Correct Score

This is the type of market where you can predict the correct final score of the regular. Scores are always on the home-away perspective, meaning if you predict 1-0, the home team should register a 1-0 victory. A good example Real Madrid vs Barcelona, if the final result was 1-2 then the winning selection would be 1-2.

Double Chance

This market is where one selection covers two outcomes. This betting prediction makes it less risky than the regular 1X2 football prediction.

Here are examples of Double chance selection

  • 1X – Home team win or draw
  • X2 – Away team win or draw
  • 12 – Home team or away team win
  • Double chance first half

Just like the full-time double chance, the first half double chance is a market where one selection covers two outcomes only for the first half outcome.

  • Double chance – Second Half

This type of football bet means you predict one of the double outcomes for the second half.

First Goalscorer

This type of football bet allows the bettor to predict the player who would score the first goal of the match. In case of a goalless draw after the regular time, all bets are voided.

If a player does not play or comes on after a goal has already been scored, bets on that player will be void. Single bets will have their bet stake refunded while affected multiple bets will remain valid but with that leg removed from the bet slip. Players that are substituted off or sent off before the first goal is scored will be settled as losing bets.

NB: Own goals do not count in settlements

Anytime Goalscorer

This type of football prediction allows you to predict the player to score anytime during the match. In the case of FT score 0-0, all bets will be voided.

Just like the first goal scorer type of a bet, if a player does not play, bets on that player will be void. Single bets will have their bet stake refunded while affected multiple bets will remain valid but with that leg removed from the bet slip.

Players that are substituted off or sent off before the goal is scored will be settled as losing bets. Every effort will be made to quote anytime goalscorer prices for all participants. However, players not quoted will count as winners should they score the first goal.

NB: Own goals do not count in settlements

Last Goalscorer

Predict the player to score the last goal of the match. In the case of FT score 0-0, all bets will be voided. If a player does not play, bets on that player will be void. Single bets will have their bet stake refunded while affected multiple bets will remain valid but with that leg removed from the betslip.

Players that are substituted off or sent off before the last goal is scored will be settled as losing bets.

Every effort will be made to quote the last goalscorer prices for all participants. However, players not quoted will count as winners should they score the first goal.

NB: Own goals do not count in settlements

Score-cast/win-cast

Scorecast is a wager/bet placed on a football match which is really two bets rolled into one, similar to a double. It sees gamblers trying to predict both a goalscorer in a game along with the final score.

Scorecast betting is extremely attractive to amateur punters due to the fact that it promises hefty returns on every winning bet, while this particular market has become very popular after top online bookmakers started offering Money Back Specials on scorecast markets.

For example, you can place a bet on Lionel Messi to score the first goal and bet on Barcelona to win 3-0 full time. If Messi nets the first goal and Barcelona secures a 3-0 victory then the gambler gets returns.

Over/Under

An over-under or over/under (O/U) bet is a wager in which a sportsbook will predict a number for a statistic in a given game (usually the combined score of the two teams), and bettors wager that the actual number in the game will be either higher or lower than that number.

  • Over/Under – Full Time

This is where a gambler predicts if there will be more or fewer goals than the suggested line during the regular time. Regular time is simply the normal 90 minutes of a match plus added minutes.) Please note that extra time do no count.

Selections:

Over x.5 – There will be more goals than the line suggested

Under x.5 – There will be fewer goals than the line suggested

Example:

Real Madrid v Barcelona

If the final result was 1-2 the winning selection for 2.5 line would be Over because three goals were scored and 3 is more than 2.5.

Over/Under – First Half

The bettor predicts if there will be more or fewer goals than the suggested line during the first half

Selections:

Over x.5 – There will be more goals than the line suggested.

Under x.5 – There will be fewer goals than the line suggested.

Over/Under – HOME – Full Time

The bettor predicts if Home team scores more or fewer goals than the suggested line during the regular time

Selections:

Over x.5 – There will be more goals than the line suggested

Under x.5 – There will be fewer goals than the line suggested

Over/Under – Away – Full Time

The gambler predicts if Away team scores more or fewer goals than the suggested line during the regular time

Selections:

Over x.5 – There will be more goals than the line suggested

Under x.5 – There will be fewer goals than the line suggested

Odd/Even

This is the type of bet where a gambler bets on the number of goals that a match will produce in an even or odd number, simply by adding them together. (Home and Away goals combined).

Examples of even goals, 0,2,4,6 etc

Odd goals, 1,3,5,7 etc.

For example, if a match between Arsenal and Manchester City ends with a 1-2 scoreline, a bettor who places on even will lose his bet while the one who selected odd will get returns.

Minute Markets

These types of football bets are whereby a bettor predicts whether or not a goal will be scored within the specified time period of the match. They are settled on the events that occur only within the specified time period of the match.

For example

1st 10 Minutes 3 way

Bet on what the result/score will be after 10 minutes of play in the first half. The first 10 minutes is considered as the time on the clock between 00:00 and 9:59.

If you bet on Arsenal vs Manchester City game to have a single goal in the first ten minutes, a goalless draw once the specified time elapses means you lose your bet while a 1-0 scoreline will see the bettor get returns.

Bet on which 10-minute interval will see the first goal of the match. Note that 09:59 is the 10th minute. Note also, that 49:59 is considered the 50th minute.

You can also bet on clean sheets for either the Home team or Away team.

  • 1st Half – Clean Sheet Away Team

Clean Sheet Away Team means the away team is to prevent the home team from scoring a goal in the first half.

  • 1st Half – Clean Sheet Home Team

1st Half – Clean Sheet Home Team means the home team is to prevent the away team from scoring a goal in the first half.

Accumulators

The betting term ‘accumulator’ refers to a single bet that involves at least four selections, but possibly many more than four. The most important difference that separates accumulator bets from other bet types is that all selections must come true in order for the bet to payout

For example, if you are placing an accumulator bet on football matches in the Premier League, your selections and odds might look something like this:

•  Everton to beat Aston Villa at 2.0 odd

• Tottenham Hotspur to beat Chelsea at 2.23 odd

•  Manchester United to beat Manchester City at 3.1 odd

• West Ham to beat Arsenal at 6.5 odd

For your accumulator to payout, you need all of your selections to prove correct.

Both Teams To Score Accumulators

Both teams to score is often abbreviated as BTTS while some bettors using GG. It is an extremely popular bet unique to football betting where you bet on both teams in a match will score or not. For a bettor to get returns on BTTS bet, both teams need to score at least one goal, making any result from 1-1 and upwards.

Example:

Real Madrid v Barcelona

If the final result is 1-2, winning selection would be Yes, because both teams scored at least one goal during the match.

In-Play Betting

In-play betting, also known as live betting involves betting on a sporting event while the event is being played.

Live betting was first offered by betting exchanges such as Betfair and Matchbook. This novel approach allowed bettors on the exchanges to place bets while the event was in progress.

For example;

If Chelsea were playing Arsenal and Chelsea went down a goal early in the second half, the odds would be adjusted to reflect Chelsea’s chances of coming back to either win or draw the match. If you believed Chelsea were set to rally and overcome the deficit, you could place a bet on Chelsea to win the match.
